As an educator I believe that the behaviour I model should be exemplary.  This extends beyond the halls of my school, and past the borders of my community.  To this end, I think it is important for students to understand the impact of their use of the internet.  Just as we have made them aware of the environmental footprint they leave when it comes to being responsible for preserving the planet, we need to make them aware of their digital footprint.  They need to understand that there can be evidence of their online existence long after they are finished with a certain website, program or online profile.
